O Magnum Mysterium - A transcription of Tomas Luis de Victoria's 1572 Choral work. The choral setting is frequently performed at Christmas time. This arrangement was premiered in 2005 by the 59th Army Band at the Remembrance Day ceremony in Grace Cathedral, San Francisco. Level 4-5
Cannon in D - This well-known Johann Pachelbel work was arranged for the 2010 Northern California Junior High School Honor Band; transposed to E flat for the convenience of wind band musicians. Using the full potential of the symphonic band, the arrangement builds from the original, light chamber texture to a dramatic conclusion. It features five mallet percussion parts and timpani with five drums. A reduced keyboard substitution for the mallet parts is included with the arrangement. Level 3-4
Kinder Symphony - The actual composer of this work is in question and may have been Franz Joseph Haydn or Leopold Mozart. The key feature is the inclusion of multiple toy instruments frequently played by young musicians. ( I can offer help in securing toy instruments that will fit the arrangement.) A fun piece for both performers and audience. Level 4
March Past of the Kitchen Utensils - Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote the original orchestral work to accompany a performance of Aristophanes' The Wasps. This 2018 arrangement was created for the Riverside Meadows Advanced Band and performed to a superior rating at the CMEA, Northern Section Band Festival. Revised bassline parts are provided to simplify the rhythmic complexity in the final portion of the work. Use of these parts will not diminish the overall effect of the work. Level 3-4
Baby Boo March - Fred Jewell wrote this 1904 lively march in tribute to, and to accompany the performance of, the first American born elephant and a feature of the Ringling Bros. Circus. A full score with modern instrumentation is provided. Level 4
Dona Nobis Pacem - This arrangement was written for the Riverside Meadows Intermediate School Bands to showcase the various sections of the band. It became a standard closer for the bands' Christmas concerts. For young musicians it is a great way to turn the simple content of this well-known round into a complete concert work. Level 2
Fanfare and Here We Come - This traditional Christmas carol, "Here We Come A Wassailing" was arranged as a Christmas concert processional for intermediate band & unison chorus; a very effective way for the singers to make a grand entrance through the audience. Level 2
Patriotic Medley - A setting of America the Beautiful, America, and God Bless America, this arrangement is my most performed work; Veterans Day, Memorial Day, County Fairs, Little League opening, July 4th, Car shows, service club meetings, local festivals, etc. All three pieces within the arrangement are in comfortable vocal ranges so that singers (rehearsed or sing-along) can join in. Level 3
Sleepers Awake - This choral by J.S. Bach is intended as a warm-up, but could be presented in a concert performance. The choral is arranged in six (6) different keys; each with a different voicing; concert B flat, E flat, A flat, C, G and D major. Using the setting that is in the key of a piece about to be rehearsed can help set that tonality clearly in the minds of the players.
This Land Is Your Land - Woody Guthrie's iconic tune is arranged for two solo violins and intermediate band. Any other like treble instruments (two clarinets, saxophones, trumpets or flutes) could be substituted for the solo violins; transposed parts are available on request. Level 2 (solos level 3)
Addams Family Theme - This simple, intermediate band version of the cute and catchy theme from the 1960s TV hit sitcom will add an enjoyable, light touch to any performance. Level 2
Go Team, Go - This pep band favorite is great for sporting events and a fun favorite for school band players. Level 2
Good Old Days Medley - This arrangement combines three well-known turn-of-the-century "barbershop" tunes; "While Strolling Through the Park," Take Me Out to the Ball Game" and "Daisy Bell (On a Bicycle Built for Two). It features various percussion effects to enhance the character of each tune; i.e. sandpaper blocks, bicycle horn, wood block, suspended cymbal. Level 3+ to 4
Letters From War - This 2003 pop song by Mark Schultz for male voice and concert band tells the touching story of a young man who goes off to war and the emotion his mother experiences when his letters suddenly stop coming. The video performance of the song was used by the army in its recruiting efforts. This arrangement uses the forces of the concert band to emulate the keyboard and percussion textures of the original pop rhythm section and strings. Versions are available in several keys to suit the singer (Contact Thomas Candlish). This arrangement is not yet under copyright to T. Candlish. The owners of the copyright has requested a quality recording of this arrangement for consideration of their copyright clearance. Level 4+ to 5
R.A.F March - This is a transcription of the official Royal Air Force by Sir Henry Walford Davies. It includes a full score and modern concert band instrumentation. Level 3+
Sobre las Olas - Juventino Rosas' published "Over the Waves" in 1888, and it remains one of the most well-known Latin American compositions. This is a full edition for modern concert band of the complete work, taking into consideration some of the classic recordings made by significant ensembles and conductors. Two different introductions are given to suit various types of performances. Level 3+
